Oklahoma Sooners Defense (1994) - Tom Hayes
The 1994 Oklahoma Sooners football team finished the season with a record of 6-6. The Sooners were led by second-year head coach Gary Gibbs, who was in his second season at Oklahoma.
Tom Hayes was a defensive line coach for the Oklahoma Sooners football team in 1994. He was in his first season at Oklahoma, and he was responsible for one of the most improved defensive lines in college football history.
Hayes' defensive philosophy was simple: be aggressive. He was known for his blitz-heavy schemes, which relied on creating pressure on the quarterback and disrupting the opposing team's offense. Hayes' defensive line was also known for its ability to stop the run and its ability to get to the quarterback.
The Sooners' defense was led by linebacker Brian Orakpo, who recorded 130 tackles and 10 sacks. Orakpo was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 1994. The Sooners' defense also had a number of other talented players, including defensive tackle Tommie Harris and safety Roy Williams.
The Sooners' biggest win of the season came in the Bedlam Series, where they defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 45-21. The Sooners' victory over Oklahoma State gave them a 6-6 record and a bowl victory.
The 1994 Oklahoma Sooners were a solid team, but they were not one of the best teams in school history. The Sooners finished the season ranked 54th in the country.
