Quarterback Gary Porter led the Cowboys' offense, amassing 1,280 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and contending with 14 interceptions. The running game was anchored by Rafael Denson, contributing 435 rushing yards and four touchdowns, while David Thompson spearheaded the receiving corps with 34 catches for 288 yards and three touchdowns.

In his first season at Oklahoma State, offensive coordinator Bill Michael implemented a potent offensive strategy that emphasized running the ball and controlling the clock. Michael's run-heavy approach, supported by a robust offensive line and a physical running back, resulted in one of the most formidable offenses in the Big Eight Conference.

Additionally, they secured the fourth spot in scoring offense, averaging 26.9 points per game.
