The 1979 Ole Miss Rebels football team concluded the season with a 4–7 record, securing a third-place finish in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) West division under the guidance of second-year head coach Steve Sloan.
Coach Sloan's straightforward coaching philosophy emphasized a run-heavy offense designed to control the clock and excel in the red zone. This approach, relying on a robust offensive line and a physical running back, characterized the Rebels' offensive strategy.
Quarterback Stan Hindman led the Rebels' offensive charge, throwing for 1,081 yards and 7 touchdowns while showcasing his running prowess with 283 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Running back James Reed bolstered the ground game, accumulating an impressive 733 rushing yards and scoring 6 touchdowns.
The receiving corps played a crucial role, with Mike Crittenden leading the way. Crittenden's standout performance, catching 31 passes for 422 yards and 2 touchdowns, earned him a well-deserved first-team All-SEC selection in 1979. Other talented receivers, including Alvin Davis and Robert Collins, contributed to the team's offensive capabilities.
A highlight of the season was the Rebels' significant victory against the Vanderbilt Commodores, securing a dominant 38-13 win. Another notable triumph was against the Tulane Green Wave, with the Rebels emerging victorious with a 31-24 scoreline.
