Oregon Ducks 4-3 Defense (2000) - Nick Aliotti

The 2000 Oregon Ducks football team, representing the University of Oregon in the Pac-10 Conference during the NCAA Division I-A football season, showcased promise under the seasoned leadership of head coach Mike Bellotti, embarking on his eighth season at Oregon.

Entering the season with elevated expectations, fueled by a notable 9-4 record and a share of the Pac-10 championship in 1999, the Ducks kicked off the 2000 campaign with a strong start. The team secured victories in their initial five games, including a notable triumph over No. 11 Nebraska. However, the latter part of the season proved challenging, with the Ducks facing setbacks in three of their final four games, including a defeat to No. 18 Washington in the Pac-10 championship game.

Nick Aliotti, returning for his second stint as the defensive coordinator, brought a renewed emphasis on defensive discipline and a steadfast commitment to stopping the run. Aliotti had previously held the same role from 1988 to 1994.

The Ducks' defensive unit, anchored by linebacker James Allen, demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the season. Allen's standout performance included 120 tackles and 2 interceptions, earning him the distinction of a first-team All-Pac-10 selection in 2000. Complementing Allen were other talented players such as defensive tackle Brandon Abercrombie, safety Rashad Bauman, and cornerback Kelly Jennings.

A highlight of the season was the Ducks' significant victory over No. 11 Nebraska, securing a hard-fought 35-28 win. Another notable triumph came against No. 25 Washington State, with the Ducks prevailing 41-38 in an overtime showdown.

Despite the challenges faced in the latter part of the season, the 2000 Oregon Ducks demonstrated resilience, skill, and the ability to compete at a high level, leaving an indelible mark in the competitive landscape of college football.
