2021 SMU Offense - Sonny Dykes & Garrett Riley

The 2021 SMU offense was one of the most explosive units in college football, led by Head Coach Sonny Dykes and Offensive Coordinator Garrett Riley. This playbook features a modern "Power" Air Raid system. While the Mustangs were known for their high-flying passing attack—led by quarterback Tanner Mordecai—the real magic was how Riley integrated a sophisticated rushing game to keep defenses honest.

By using wide splits for offensive linemen and receivers, SMU forced defenders to cover the entire width of the field. This created massive lanes for both the deep vertical passing game and efficient inside zone runs. The 2021 squad finished the season ranked in the top 15 nationally for total offense, averaging 41.6 points per game.

Strategy Highlights:

  • Vertical Choice Routes: Giving receivers the freedom to find open space based on the defender's leverage.

  • Tempo: Using a "no-huddle" pace to exhaust defensive lines and prevent substitutions.

  • RPO Integration: Combining simple run plays with quick perimeter passes to outnumber the defense at the point of attack.
