The 2015 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team was a force to be reckoned with, not just because of their high-powered offense and stout defense, but also due to their exceptional special teams unit. Head Coach Brian Kelly emphasized the importance of all three phases of the game, and the special teams unit proved to be a critical factor in the team's success that season.
One of the most exciting aspects of Notre Dame's special teams in 2015 was their dynamic return game. C.J. Sanders, a speedy freshman, emerged as a significant playmaker. Sanders consistently provided excellent field position for the Irish, highlighted by a 50-yard punt return touchdown against UMass and a 93-yard kickoff return touchdown against Stanford. His ability to change the game's momentum with a single return made him a valuable asset.
The kicking game was another strong point for Notre Dame. Kicker Justin Yoon, also a freshman, displayed remarkable poise and accuracy throughout the season. Yoon made 15 out of 17 field goal attempts, boasting an impressive 88.2% success rate. His reliable leg was crucial in tight games, providing the Irish with consistent points.
Punter Tyler Newsome played a vital role in the field position battle, consistently pinning opponents deep in their territory. Newsome averaged 44.5 yards per punt, demonstrating both power and precision. His ability to flip the field and give the defense a longer field to work with was invaluable.
The coverage units, often overlooked, were a cornerstone of Notre Dame's special teams success. Led by special teams coordinator Scott Booker, the Irish excelled in limiting opponents' return yards. The kickoff and punt coverage teams played with discipline and tenacity, often swarming returners and preventing big plays. Key contributors like Matthias Farley and Drue Tranquill were instrumental in maintaining excellent coverage.
One of the standout moments for Notre Dame's special teams came in their thrilling 24-20 victory over Temple. Late in the fourth quarter, with the game on the line, the Irish punt coverage unit downed a punt inside the Temple 10-yard line, forcing the Owls to drive the length of the field against a stout Notre Dame defense. This crucial play epitomized the impact of special teams on the outcome of games.
