1993 Stanford Cardinal West Coast Offense - Bill Walsh
The coach of the 1993 Stanford football team was Bill Walsh.
Bill Walsh is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. He won three Super Bowls as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and is credited with developing the "West Coast offense," a highly effective passing scheme that emphasizes short, accurate throws and yards after the catch. Walsh was also a successful college football coach, leading Stanford to two Pac-10 championships and two Rose Bowl appearances during his tenure from 1977 to 1988.
Bill Walsh coached the Stanford Cardinal football team from 1977-1978 and 1992-1994. In 1993, his second stint with the team, he led them to a 5-6 record. Despite their losing record, the team had several notable wins that season, including victories over USC and Notre Dame. The team also had future NFL quarterback Steve Stenstrom as their starting quarterback.
In 1993, Bill Walsh installed a version of the West Coast offense at Stanford. The West Coast offense emphasizes short, high-percentage passes that move the ball down the field methodically. It also puts a premium on accurate quarterback play and places a lot of responsibility on the quarterback to read the defense and make quick decisions. Walsh's version of the West Coast offense also incorporated a power running game, which helped keep opposing defenses off balance.
