Most offensive coaches are obsessed with finding different ways to get the ball to their athletes in space. That’s why the jailbreak screen has become an incredibly popular play with offenses at every level.
But how exactly do you coach it and what are the teaching tips for each position? Today we’re going to talk about how Rochester runs one of their best jailbreak screen plays.

The Fake Bubble Jailbreak Screen
The idea behind this play is to sell the bubble screen. The slot receiver should take 3 steps outside and then plant to get right back inside. He should be aiming for what Coach Leonard calls “The Runway” to get underneath the blockers and then downhill, and it’s at about a 45 degree angle from the receiver’s original alignment.
The Y has to go get the guy over the #2 receiver to keep him free to catch the ball and run after the catch. The PS Tackle has the first guy outside the box, who in this case is the nickel safety. The PSG has to get out and has the first thing inside the box.
If the defense wants to blitz, let them blitz and don’t get in their way too much, just slow them down enough that they don’t have a completely free shot at the QB, and go get downfield.
Meanwhile the BSG is supposed to go cleanup any backside pursuit and the BST’s job changes depending on who he is and what his skill set is from year to year. The QB has big 3 step drop, eyes down the middle of the field. Against a blitz it can come out on the 3rd step.
