1970s San Diego Chargers - Charlie Waller
Charlie Waller was a football defensive coordinator in the National Football League (NFL) from 1967 to 1970. He served as the defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers from 1967 to 1969, and then for the Houston Oilers in 1970.
Waller was born in Oglethorpe, Georgia, in 1921. He played college football at Oglethorpe University, where he was a two-time All-Southern Conference selection. After college, Waller served in the United States Navy during World War II.
After the war, Waller began his coaching career as an assistant at Oglethorpe. He then moved on to the University of Florida, where he served as an assistant coach from 1949 to 1955. In 1956, Waller was hired by the Chargers as an assistant coach. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1967.
Charlie Waller was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers for the 1970 season. He was the interim head coach after Sid Gillman resigned due to health reasons. The Chargers finished the season with a record of 5-6-3, missing the playoffs.
During his time with the Chargers, Waller helped to build one of the best defenses in the NFL. The Chargers' defense led the NFL in fewest points allowed in 1969 and 1970. Waller's defenses were known for their aggressive style and their ability to create turnovers.
Charlie Waller ran a 4-3 defense with the San Diego Chargers in the 1970s. The 4-3 defense is a base defense that uses four defensive linemen and three linebackers. The linemen are responsible for stopping the run and pressuring the quarterback. The linebackers are responsible for covering the pass and making tackles.
Waller's 4-3 defense was known for its aggressiveness and its ability to create turnovers. The Chargers' defense led the NFL in fewest points allowed in 1969 and 1970.
In 1970, Waller left the Chargers to become the defensive coordinator for the Houston Oilers. He remained with the Oilers for one season before retiring from coaching.
Waller died in 2009 at the age of 87. He was inducted into the Chargers' Hall of Fame in 1991.
