1991 New England Patriots - Joe Collier
Joe Collier was a football defensive coordinator who helped shape the modern game. He was known for his aggressive style of defense and his ability to get the most out of his players.
Collier was born in Rock Island, Illinois, in 1932. He played college football at Northwestern University, where he was a two-time All-Big Ten selection. After college, Collier played briefly in the NFL before embarking on a coaching career.
Joe Collier was the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots in 1991. The Patriots defense was not very successful that season, ranking 26th in the NFL in points allowed.
However, there were some bright spots. The Patriots had a strong pass rush, led by defensive end Bruce Armstrong and linebacker Andre Tippett. Armstrong and Tippett combined for 22 sacks that season.
The Patriots also had a good secondary, led by cornerback Ty Law and safety Lawyer Milloy. Law and Milloy combined for five interceptions that season.
Despite the strong individual performances, the Patriots defense as a whole struggled. The team allowed an average of 27.1 points per game, which was the second-most in the NFL.
Collier left the Patriots after the 1991 season to become the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. He later worked for the Oakland Raiders and the New York Jets.
