It’s VERY difficult to have a dominant offense if your quarterback doesn’t feel comfortable while running it.
This is a principle that Montana State Offensive Coordinator Taylor Housewright firmly believes contributes to winning and success at all levels of football.
Today we’re going to cover this topic, which is taken directly from our six-part series: The Montana State Offense – The Complete Series
How To Keep Your Offense QB Friendly
Any good coach knows that if your QB doesn’t understand what’s going on within your offense, you’re in trouble.
In order to avoid this, coach Housewright follows a series of rules to keep his QB in a strong environment that breeds success from the top down.
First, the QB is given easy reads. This progresses from each passing concept having a progression, followed by a shell ID pre-snap.

Second, Montana State’s offense always has a structured offensive system. This can change from year-to year, but it must be established and built upon beginning on day 1.
Coach Housewright also preaches teaching defense to his QBs. If they understand the fronts and coverages that they’re facing, they will take their game to the next level.
Play to your offense’s strengths. As a coach it’s your job to ID what your players do well and what they don’t. Figure out how these skills all work together and help your players understand that for themselves.
Finally, allow your guys to play! Do just enough to guide your athletes in the right direction, but don’t over coach! If your players are overthinking, they aren’t playing to their maximum potential. Give them the tools that they need to succeed, and great things will happen!
Coach Housewright discusses this topic and SO MUCH MORE in our latest release: The Montana State Offense – The Complete Series!
