Delaware Wing T James Thurman
James Thurman was the Head Athletic Trainer for the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens football team from 1966 to 1996. Born in 1930, Thurman graduated from the University of Delaware in 1958 with a degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
James Thurman was a strong advocate for the Wing-T offense, and he used it extensively with the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens football team from 1966 to 1996. The Wing-T offense is a run-oriented offense that is designed to create mismatches between the offense and the defense. It is characterized by its use of three running backs lined up behind the quarterback, with two of the running backs positioned behind the quarterback's hips and the third running back positioned behind the quarterback's heels.
Thurman's version of the Wing-T offense was a very effective offense. The Fightin' Blue Hens averaged 289.0 rushing yards per game during Thurman's tenure, which was the third-most in the nation. The Fightin' Blue Hens also averaged 34.2 points per game, which was the 11th-most in the nation.
Thurman's Wing-T offense was a big reason for the Fightin' Blue Hens' success during his tenure. The Fightin' Blue Hens won 300 games during Thurman's tenure, including the 1979 NCAA Division II National Championship.
