The 1989 Duke Blue Devils football team was led by head coach Steve Spurrier in his second season at the helm. Spurrier had quickly instituted his "Fun 'n' Gun" offense at Duke, and the 1989 Blue Devils featured one of the most prolific passing attacks in college football history.

Steve Spurrier was the head coach of the 1989 Duke Blue Devils football team. He was in his second season at Duke, after leaving the University of Florida following the 1987 season.

Spurrier had a reputation for being an offensive genius, and he quickly instituted his "Fun 'n' Gun" offense at Duke. The Fun 'n' Gun offense was a high-octane passing offense that emphasized quick throws and big plays.

The 1989 Blue Devils were led by quarterback David Klingler, who passed for over 5,000 yards and 44 touchdowns. Klingler was one of the most prolific passers in college football history, and he was a major reason for the Blue Devils' success in 1989.

The Blue Devils finished the 1989 season with a record of 8-3-1, including a 6-1 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Blue Devils shared the ACC championship with Virginia, and they advanced to the Aloha Bowl.
