The defense coordinator for the 1974 Houston Cougars was Pete Rodriguez. Rodriguez was a veteran coach who had previously served as the head coach at the University of Utah from 1967 to 1973. He was hired by new Cougars head coach Bill Yeoman to lead the defense.

Rodriguez's defense was known for being tough and physical. He emphasized stopping the run and pressuring the quarterback. The Cougars' defense was also known for its speed and athleticism.

In 1974, the Cougars' defense allowed just 12.8 points per game, which ranked 18th in the nation. The Cougars also forced 30 turnovers, which ranked 21st in the nation.

The Cougars' defense was a major reason why the team was able to finish the season with a record of 8-3-1 and win the Southwest Conference championship. The Cougars' defense also helped the team to reach the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl, where they lost to the University of Maryland, 33-17.

The 6-1 defense is a defensive scheme that uses six defensive linemen and one linebacker. The defense is designed to stop the run and to pressure the quarterback.
