Joe Lee Dunn was the defensive coordinator of the Mississippi State Bulldogs from 1996 to 2002. He was known for his aggressive defensive schemes and his ability to develop young players. Under Dunn's guidance, the Bulldogs' defense became one of the best in the SEC.
In 2001, the Bulldogs' defense ranked second in the SEC in rushing defense, and they also forced 29 turnovers, which was tied for the most in the conference. The Bulldogs' defense was led by linebacker Derek Brooks, who was a consensus All-American. Brooks recorded 151 tackles, 13 sacks, and 11 forced fumbles in 2001. The Bulldogs also had a number of other talented players on defense, including defensive tackle Omarr Conner and cornerback Fred Smoot.
Dunn's defensive scheme was based on pressure and disruption. He liked to blitz the quarterback and force turnovers. Dunn was also known for his ability to develop young players. Brooks was a freshman in 1998, and he quickly became one of the best linebackers in the SEC under Dunn's tutelage.
Dunn left Mississippi State after the 2002 season to become the head coach of the Memphis Tigers. He led the Tigers to three bowl games during his six seasons at the school. Dunn is currently the defensive coordinator at New Mexico State University.
