Notre Dame Fighting Irish Defense (1999) - Greg Mattison

The 1999 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team concluded the season with a 5-7 record under the leadership of head coach Bob Davie. Greg Mattison served as the defensive coordinator, overseeing a struggling defense that faced significant challenges throughout the season.

Known for his 'bend but don't break' approach, Mattison's defensive strategy primarily relied on zone coverage to thwart prominent plays. However, the defense struggled to contain the run and often succumbed to significant passing plays, leading to a disappointing season for the team.

On the offensive front, the Fighting Irish faced significant struggles, averaging a mere 29.0 points per game, placing them at 75th in the country. Quarterback Jarious Jackson led the charge, contributing 2,397 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, along with 433 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. The team also saw notable contributions from running back Julius Jones, who rushed for 821 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Despite their defensive and offensive struggles, linebacker Courtney Watson emerged as a standout player, recording 101 tackles and 12 sacks, earning a well-deserved first-team All-Big East selection. Other notable players on the defense included John McCargo and Gerome Sapp, who contributed to the team's efforts throughout the season.

The season's highlight for the Irish came in the final game, where they clinched a 28-24 victory over the Navy Midshipmen, breaking a challenging four-game losing streak.
