Houston Cougars 6-1 Defense (1970)
The defensive coordinator of the 1970 Houston Cougars was defensive backs coach Chuck Fairbanks. Fairbanks was a legendary college football coach who led the Colorado Buffaloes to a national championship in 1961. He was the head coach of the New England Patriots in the NFL from 1973 to 1978.
Fairbanks was a disciple of Bear Bryant, and he brought Bryant's "4-3 defense" to the Houston Cougars. The 4-3 defense is a defensive scheme that uses four defensive linemen and three linebackers. The defense is designed to stop the run and to pressure the quarterback.
The 1970 Houston Cougars defense was one of the best defenses in the country. They allowed just over 11 points per game, which was the fewest in the country. The Cougars' defense was led by linebacker Ray Nitschke, who was one of the best linebackers in NFL history. The Cougars' defense also had a number of other talented players, including defensive backs Willie Wood and Ken Houston.
