1985 Houston Gamblers - Jim Eddy

Jim Eddy was an American football coach who is best known for his work as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Gambles of the United States Football League (USFL) from 1984 to 1985. He was also the head coach at the University of Wyoming from 1987 to 1990 and at the University of Houston from 1991 to 1999.

Eddy was born in Checotah, Oklahoma, in 1936. He played college football at New Mexico State University, where he was a two-time All-Western Athletic Conference selection. After college, Eddy played professional football for the Oakland Raiders of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960.

Eddy began his coaching career as an assistant at New Mexico State University. He then moved on to the University of Oklahoma, where he served as the defensive coordinator from 1971 to 1974. In 1975, Eddy was hired as the head coach at the University of Southern Mississippi. He led the Golden Eagles to a record of 23-26 in four seasons.

In 1979, Eddy was hired as the defensive coordinator for the University of Alabama. He remained in that position until 1984, when he was hired by the Houston Gambles.

Eddy was a pioneer of the 3-4 defense. He was one of the first coaches to use this defense in the USFL, and he helped to make it a popular defense in the NFL.

The 3-4 defense was a relatively new defense at the time, and Eddy was one of the first coaches to use it in the USFL. The Gambles were not very successful in 1985, but they did have a good defense. They finished the season ranked 3rd in the league in fewest points allowed.
