1985 Los Angeles Rams - Fritz Shurmur
Fritz Shurmur was an American football coach who is best known for his work as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Rams. He was also the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings and the Cleveland Browns.
Shurmur was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in 1939. He played college football at the University of North Dakota, where he was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. After college, Shurmur played professional football for the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants.
Shurmur began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Minnesota. He then moved on to the Minnesota Vikings, where he served as the defensive coordinator from 1975 to 1983. The Vikings were one of the best teams in the NFL during Shurmur's tenure, winning two Super Bowls.
In 1984, Shurmur was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams were a dominant team in 1985, finishing the season with a record of 10-6 and reaching the NFC Championship Game. Their defense was one of the best in the NFL, allowing just 22.8 points per game.
Fritz Shurmur's "Eagle 5 defense" was a variation of the 4-3 defense that was designed to be more aggressive. It featured a strong safety who played deep in the middle of the field and two linebackers who played close to the line of scrimmage. This allowed the Rams to pressure the quarterback and force turnovers.
The Eagle 5 defense was named after Kevin Greene, who wore jersey number 5. Greene was the middle linebacker in the Eagle 5 defense, and he was responsible for coordinating the defense and making sure that everyone was in the right position.
The Eagle 5 defense was a key factor in the Rams' success in 1985. They led the NFL in fewest points allowed and forced a league-high 47 turnovers. They also shut out three of their opponents and allowed only 10 points or less in nine games.
The Eagle 5 defense was a revolutionary defense that changed the way the NFL game was played. It was a more aggressive defense that put pressure on the quarterback and forced turnovers. The Eagle 5 defense is still used by some teams today, and it is considered to be one of the most effective defenses in the NFL.
