Atlanta Falcons Offense (1986) - Dan Henning
Dan Henning was the offensive coordinator for the 1986 Atlanta Falcons football team. He was a former player and assistant coach in the National Football League (NFL). He was known for his innovative offensive schemes and his ability to develop quarterbacks.
Dan Henning was a proponent of the West Coast offense, which is a passing-oriented offense that is designed to take advantage of short passes and quick reads. The West Coast offense is based on the idea of timing and deception, and it is often called a "horizontal" offense because it relies on short passes to move the ball down the field.
Henning's offense was a variation of the West Coast offense that was popular in the 1980s. He added a few wrinkles to the offense, including a play-action pass that was called the "bootleg." The bootleg play was a designed quarterback run, but the quarterback could also throw the ball if he saw an open receiver.
The Falcons' offense was very successful in 1986. They led the NFL in passing yards with 4,232 yards and 28 touchdowns. They also averaged 24.3 points per game, which was the seventh-most in the league.
