1992 Rice Owls Veer Option Offense - Ken Hatfield
Ken Hatfield is a retired American football player and coach. He played college football at the University of Arkansas and was a three-year starter at quarterback. After his playing days, he became a coach and had a successful career at several universities, including Rice, Clemson, and Arkansas. He was known for his innovative offensive and defensive schemes and his ability to develop players. Hatfield was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
In 1992, Ken Hatfield was in his second year as head coach at Rice. The team finished with a record of 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the Southwest Conference, which was good for a fifth-place finish in the conference standings.
One of the team's notable wins that season was a 21-10 victory over rival Houston in the annual Bayou Bucket Classic. It was Rice's first win in the series since 1984.
Ken Hatfield was known for his "Triple Option" offense, which was a variation of the wishbone offense. This offensive style relied heavily on the running game, with the quarterback and running backs frequently making option decisions on the fly based on the defensive alignment. It was a run-first offense that aimed to control the clock and wear down opposing defenses. At Rice, Hatfield's team relied on a strong ground game and a ball-control offense to win games.
