Oklahoma State Cowboys Offense (1996) - Les Miles
The 1996 Oklahoma State Cowboys football team concluded the season with a 5-6 record, securing a fifth-place finish in the competitive Big 12 Conference. Guided by head coach Bob Simmons in his third season at Oklahoma State, the team displayed promise and resilience.
Offensive Coordinator Les Miles, in his second season with the Cowboys, played a pivotal role in crafting one of the most potent offenses in the Big 12 Conference. Miles' offensive philosophy centered on spreading the ball around and allowing athletes to make plays. Renowned for his pass-heavy approach, the offense relied on quick, short passes to create mismatches and exploit defensive gaps. The tempo was uptempo, emphasizing the ability to score points rapidly.
Quarterback Tony Lindsay led the Cowboys' dynamic offense, amassing 2,333 passing yards and contributing 16 touchdowns. Lindsay showcased versatility as a runner, adding 322 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Running back Andre Richardson complemented the offensive effort with an impressive 1,031 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.
A standout moment for the Cowboys was their victory in the Bedlam Series, where they triumphed over the Oklahoma Sooners with a commanding 38-20 scoreline. This win marked their first success in the Bedlam Series since 1992. Notable victories in 1996 also included wins against the Texas A&M Aggies, the Colorado Buffaloes, and the Missouri Tigers.
The 1996 Oklahoma State Cowboys, with a potent offense, solid defense, and a robust coaching staff, hinted at a promising future. Expectations were high for contending in the Big 12 Championship in 1997, but the team faced disappointment, concluding the season with a 5-7 record.
