Bob Sutton was the head coach of the Army Black Knights football team from 1993 to 2002. He was a former player and assistant coach at the United States Military Academy.
The Black Knights led the nation in turnovers forced in 1997 with 36, and they also allowed just 20.9 points per game, which was the third-fewest in the country.
The Black Knights finished the 1997 season with a record of 4–7, but they were competitive in most of their games. They lost to Navy by a score of 21–17, and they lost to Air Force by a score of 21–17.
The option offense used by Bob Sutton during his tenure as the head coach of the 1997 Army Black Knights was a pivotal aspect of the team's playing style. Known for its emphasis on running the football and the triple option, this offensive system played to the strengths of the team's personnel and reflected the academy's tradition of disciplined, ground-based football.
