1997 Kentucky Air Raid - Hal Mumme

The coach of the 1997 Kentucky football team was Hal Mumme.

Hal Mumme is a former American football coach who is best known for his innovative offensive strategies, particularly the Air Raid offense. He is credited with revolutionizing the game of football by introducing the forward pass as the primary offensive weapon, and his ideas have had a significant influence on the modern game. Mumme has coached at both the college and professional levels, and has achieved success at each, with notable coaching stints at Valdosta State, Kentucky, and New Mexico State. He was also an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL).

In 1997, Hal Mumme's first year as head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, the team finished with a 5-6 record. While it wasn't a winning season, it was a significant improvement over the team's 4-7 record the previous year.

One notable game that season was the "Bluegrass Miracle" game against LSU, which Kentucky lost 39-36 on a last-second Hail Mary pass.

Despite the losing record, Mumme's "Air Raid" offense had a breakout year, with quarterback Tim Couch throwing for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Hal Mumme is known for being the pioneer of the "Air Raid" offense, which is a pass-heavy, high-scoring offense. At Kentucky in 1997, he implemented this offense, and it proved to be successful, as the team set multiple school and conference passing records. The offense relied heavily on the quarterback and receivers to make quick decisions and precise throws, often running no-huddle to keep the defense off-balance. The running game was de-emphasized in favor of the passing game, which is a hallmark of the Air Raid offense.
