Oklahoma State 46 Defense (1997) - Rob Ryan
The 1997 Oklahoma State Cowboys football team finished the season with a record of 8-4 and a fifth-place finish in the Big 12 Conference. The Cowboys were led by head coach Bob Simmons, who was in his third season at Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys' defense was also very good in 1997. The Cowboys allowed only 200 points all season, which was the 19th-fewest in the country. The Cowboys' defense was led by linebacker Kenyatta Wright, who recorded 128 tackles and 10 sacks. Wright was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 1997. The Cowboys' defense also had a number of other talented players, including defensive tackle Corey Williams and safety James Anderson.
Rob Ryan was the defensive coordinator of the 1997 Oklahoma State Cowboys football team. He was in his first season at Oklahoma State, and he led the Cowboys to one of the best defenses in the country.
Ryan's defensive philosophy was simple: bend but don't break. He was known for his zone defense, which relied on coverage from the secondary to prevent big plays. However, Ryan's defense was also known for its inability to stop the run and its tendency to give up big plays in the passing game.
The Cowboys' biggest win of the season came in the Bedlam Series, where they defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 38-20. The Cowboys' victory over Oklahoma was their first win in the Bedlam Series since 1992.
