The coach of the 2000 Valdosta State football team was Chris Hatcher.
Chris Hatcher is a former American football player and coach. He played quarterback at Valdosta State University, where he set school records and won the Harlon Hill Trophy in 1994 as the best player in Division II. After playing professionally in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League, Hatcher began his coaching career as an assistant at Valdosta State in 1996. He then went on to coach at several colleges, including Kentucky, Georgia Southern, and Murray State, before returning to Valdosta State as the head coach in 2000.
As a head coach, Hatcher is known for his high-scoring offenses and aggressive play-calling using his air raid playbook. He led Valdosta State to a Division II national championship in his first season as head coach, and he has also had success at other schools, including Murray State and Samford. In 2015, Hatcher became the head coach at Mercer University, where he has continued to build a successful program.
Chris Hatcher was the head coach of the Valdosta State Blazers football team from 2000-2006. In his first season in 2000, Hatcher led the Blazers to a 9-3 overall record and a Gulf South Conference championship. The team then advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs and made it all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to Delta State.
Under Hatcher's leadership, Valdosta State had a winning record in each of his seven seasons as head coach. He led the Blazers to three Gulf South Conference championships and six NCAA Division II playoff appearances. In 2004, the Blazers won the NCAA Division II national championship, defeating Pittsburg State 36-31 in the championship game.
During his time at Valdosta State, Hatcher's teams were known for their high-powered offense, averaging over 30 points per game in six of his seven seasons as head coach.
Chris Hatcher is known for his innovative offense style, which he refers to as the "Hatch Attack." This offense style is characterized by a fast-paced, high-scoring passing game that relies heavily on the no-huddle and spread formations. In 2000, as the head coach at Valdosta State, Hatcher's offense was one of the most explosive in Division II, averaging over 40 points per game and over 500 yards of total offense per game. He emphasizes the importance of tempo, accuracy, and decision-making for his quarterbacks, and has produced several successful signal-callers throughout his coaching career.
