Charleston Southern Buccaneers 3-3 Stack Defense (2003)
Jay Mills was the defensive coordinator for the 2003 Charleston Southern Buccaneers.
Mills came to Charleston Southern from Harvard University, and had spent time coaching at several other places, including Boise State, Notre Dame and Minnesota-Morris. His system shifted from CSU's traditional power based, pro style offense to a spread offense.
Jay Mills is known for his aggressive defensive style, which is often referred to as a "pressure defense." Mills' defenses are typically characterized by their use of blitzes and their ability to create turnovers.
Mills' defensive style has been successful in the past. In 2006, his first season as the head coach of the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, Mills led the team to a 9-2 record and a Big South Conference championship. The Buccaneers' defense was ranked first in the Big South Conference in scoring defense, allowing just 16.8 points per game.
