He has been recognized for his success in turning around struggling programs, including leading Tulsa to a Conference USA championship in 2010 and Pittsburgh to a Big East championship in 2011. Graham is also known for his "Desert Swarm" defense that he implemented at Arizona State, which was based on aggressive blitzing and creating turnovers.

In 2010, Todd Graham coached the Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team to a 10-3 record. The team won the Conference USA championship and defeated Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl. The Golden Hurricane had a prolific offense, ranking second in the nation in total offense with an average of 505.6 yards per game. They were also third in the country in scoring offense, averaging 41.4 points per game. The defense was also solid, ranking 29th in the nation in total defense, allowing an average of 336.2 yards per game.
