The coach of the 2016 Arizona Cardinals football team was Bruce Arians.

Bruce Arians is a former American football coach who served as the head coach for multiple NFL teams. He was born on October 3, 1952, in Paterson, New Jersey. Arians played quarterback in college at Virginia Tech before starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the team in 1975.

Arians spent many years as an assistant coach in the NFL with various teams before finally becoming a head coach in 2012 with the Indianapolis Colts. He led the Colts to a playoff berth that year while serving as interim head coach while Chuck Pagano was undergoing treatment for leukemia. Arians was then hired as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in 2013, where he remained until his retirement after the 2017 season.

Arians is known for his offensive-minded coaching style and is credited with developing quarterbacks such as Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, and Carson Palmer. He has won two NFL Coach of the Year awards, in 2012 and 2014.

In 2016, Bruce Arians led the Arizona Cardinals to a record of 7-8-1, finishing third in the NFC West division. Despite not making the playoffs that season, Arians was still highly regarded as a coach, having led the Cardinals to a record of 50-32-1 in his five seasons with the team (2013-2017). During his tenure, the Cardinals made the playoffs twice (2014 and 2015) and reached the NFC Championship Game in 2015. Arians was known for his aggressive offensive play-calling and his willingness to take risks, as well as his ability to develop and mentor quarterbacks.

Bruce Arians is known for running an aggressive, downfield passing offense. At the 2016 Arizona Cardinals, Arians continued this philosophy by utilizing a vertical passing attack that looked to take advantage of their quarterback, Carson Palmer's, arm strength and accuracy. The offense was predicated on stretching the field vertically with deep routes, while using shorter passes and screens to keep the defense honest and create yards after the catch opportunities. Arians also emphasized the use of tight ends and running backs in the passing game, often utilizing them as matchup nightmares for linebackers and safeties. The Cardinals offense under Arians was known for its explosive plays and ability to put up big numbers on the scoreboard.
