2017 UCLA Offense - Jim Mora & Jedd Fisch
The 2017 UCLA Bruins offense, led by head coach Jim Mora and offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, was a pass-heavy and explosive unit, largely revolving around the talents of quarterback Josh Rosen. Despite the team’s overall struggles, finishing the season with a 6-7 record, the offense had several bright moments, especially in the passing game.
Jedd Fisch, who was hired as the offensive coordinator in 2017, brought a pro-style offensive scheme with a strong emphasis on the passing game. Fisch, who had NFL experience and had previously been an offensive coordinator at Michigan, integrated a lot of NFL-style concepts, including a mix of West Coast offense elements, quick throws, and vertical passing plays.
The Bruins were highly dependent on the passing attack, with Rosen shouldering much of the offensive load. The offense employed various personnel groupings and formations, but the aerial attack was its focal point.
As the offensive coordinator, Jedd Fisch was able to get the most out of Rosen and the passing game. His NFL-style approach meshed well with Rosen's strengths, and while the running game lagged behind, the passing attack was one of the most productive in the country.
Despite the offensive fireworks through the air, Fisch’s efforts were not enough to compensate for the team’s defensive issues and overall inconsistency, which led to the firing of Jim Mora after the regular season.
2017 was Jim Mora’s final season as head coach of UCLA. After leading the program for six seasons, Mora was dismissed following the Bruins’ 5-6 regular season, a disappointing result given the expectations surrounding Rosen and the offensive talent.
Mora’s tenure at UCLA had started strong, with the Bruins enjoying success early in his tenure, but by 2017 the program had faltered. The defense struggled, and the inability to put together a balanced team led to his departure.
In summary, the 2017 UCLA offense was largely defined by the impressive play of Josh Rosen and the high-powered passing attack orchestrated by Jedd Fisch. However, the team’s lack of balance, injuries, and inconsistency ultimately led to a disappointing overall season and a change in leadership for the program.
