4-6 Gambler Defense
The 46 Gambler Defense is a variation of the 46 defense that was popularized by Buddy Ryan in the 1980s. It is a very aggressive defense that relies on pressure from the front four to create turnovers. The defense is named the "Gambler" because it takes a risk by only rushing four players, leaving seven defenders in coverage.
The 46 Gambler Defense is set up with a 4-3 front, but the defensive end on the strong side of the formation (the side where the tight end is aligned) is responsible for both rushing the passer and covering the running back. This player is known as the "force player" and is typically the most athletic player on the defense.
The other three defensive linemen are responsible for rushing the passer. The nose tackle is responsible for the middle of the line, while the two defensive tackles are responsible for the gaps on either side of the nose tackle.
The seven defensive backs are responsible for coverage. The two safeties are responsible for the deep middle of the field, while the cornerbacks are responsible for the outside receivers. The two linebackers are responsible for the flats and the middle of the field.
The 46 Gambler Defense is a very aggressive defense that can be very effective against passing teams. However, it is also a very risky defense, as it leaves the defense vulnerable to running plays. As a result, the 46 Gambler Defense is not used as often as it once was.
