Cal Golden Bears Offense (1980)

The offensive coordinator for the 1980 California Golden Bears football team was Al Saunders. He was in his first season with the team after spending the previous two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers.

Saunders was a respected offensive mind in the NFL, and he brought a new approach to the Bears' offense. He installed a more pass-oriented offense, which featured a number of short, quick passes. This was a departure from the Bears' traditional running game, and it took some time for the players to adjust to the new system.

The Bears' offense struggled in 1980, averaging just 17.6 points per game. However, there were some signs of progress, as the Bears passed for over 2,000 yards for the first time in school history.

Saunders was known for his innovative offensive schemes and his ability to develop quarterbacks. He was also a great motivator and teacher, and he was able to get the most out of his players.

Even though the 1980 Bears' offense struggled, Saunders' impact on the program was significant. He introduced a new offensive philosophy to the Bears, and he helped to develop a number of young players who would become key contributors in the years to come.
