The Bengals finished the season with a record of 9-7, which was good enough for a wild card spot in the AFC playoffs. The Bengals defeated the Houston Oilers in the wild card round, but they lost to the Oakland Raiders in the divisional round.

The Bengals were led by head coach Sam Wyche, who was in his seventh season with the team. Wyche had led the Bengals to the playoffs in four of his previous six seasons, and he was known for his innovative offensive schemes and his colorful personality.

Sam Wyche was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals from 1984 to 1991. He led the Bengals to the playoffs in five of his eight seasons as head coach, including a berth in Super Bowl XXIII in 1988.

Wyche's Bengals were known for their high-powered offense, which was led by quarterback Boomer Esiason and wide receiver Cris Collinsworth. The Bengals averaged 27.3 points per game in 1988, which was the fifth-most in the NFL.

Wyche was also known for his innovative offensive schemes and his colorful personality. He was one of the first coaches to use the no-huddle offense, and he was also known for his use of play-action passes and misdirection.
