Houston Gamblers USFL Run and Shoot Offense (1985) - Kevin Gilbride
The 1985 Houston Gamblers were one of the most successful teams in the United States Football League (USFL). The Gamblers finished the regular season with a record of 11-5, and they won the Southern Division championship. The Gamblers also reached the USFL Championship Game, where they lost to the Baltimore Stars.
Kevin Gilbride was the offensive coordinator of the 1985 Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL). Gilbride was a disciple of Mouse Davis, who is credited with developing the "run and shoot" offense.
Gilbride's run and shoot offense was very effective for the 1985 Houston Gamblers. The Gamblers averaged over 350 yards per game passing, and they scored over 30 points per game. The Gamblers' offense was led by quarterback Jim Kelly, who threw for over 5,000 yards and 41 touchdowns in 1985. Kelly was one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the USFL, and he was able to make plays with his arm and his legs.
The run and shoot offense is a pass-heavy offense that emphasizes speed, precision, and timing. The offense is designed to spread the defense and create mismatches for receivers.
