Houston Oilers Offense (1983)
The 1983 Houston Oilers were a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The team competed in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) Central Division. The Oilers played their home games at the Astrodome.
The Oilers finished the 1983 season with a record of 2-14, which was their worst record since 1965. The team was led by head coach Ed Biles, who was fired after the season.
The offensive coordinator for the 1983 Houston Oilers was Kay Dalton.
Dalton was a former quarterback who played in the NFL for 12 seasons. He retired from playing in 1972 and began his coaching career the following season. He was hired as the Oilers' offensive coordinator in 1981 and served in that role for three seasons.
The NFL offense used by the 1983 Houston Oilers was a pro-style offense that emphasized running the ball. The Oilers had a strong running game, led by running back Kenny Burks. Burks was a physical runner who was able to gain yards after contact.
The Oilers also had a number of talented receivers, including Tim Smith, Mike Renfro, and Kenny Patterson. However, the Oilers' passing game was not as productive as their running game. The Oilers' quarterback in 1983 was Dan Pastorini, who was a veteran of the league. However, Pastorini was not as effective as he had been in previous years.
