The 1998 Illinois Fighting Illini Defense faced its fair share of challenges, finishing the season as a unit ranked 101st in the nation for scoring defense, allowing an average of 35.8 points per game. In terms of total defense, they ranked 100th nationally, surrendering an average of 447.7 yards per game. Despite these struggles, the defense showcased its ability to generate turnovers, ranking 31st in the nation with 25 forced turnovers.
Leading the charge for this defense was linebacker Matt Sinclair, a standout performer who earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team. At the helm of the Illinois Fighting Illini Defense in 1998 was defensive coordinator Tim Kish, who was in his second season with the Illini. Kish had previously held the position of defensive coordinator at the University of Akron from 1994 to 1996.
