BYU Cougars 4-3 Defense (1993)
Ken Schmidt was the defensive coordinator for the 1993 BYU Cougars. He was in his third season with the team, and he would go on to become one of the most successful defensive coordinators in BYU history.
Schmidt's defense was known for its aggressive style of play and its ability to create turnovers. In 1993, the BYU defense forced 38 turnovers, which was the most in the Western Athletic Conference. The defense also ranked fifth in the WAC in scoring defense, allowing just 26.2 points per game.
The BYU defense was led by a number of talented players in 1993, including linebacker Kalin Hall, defensive end Steve Christensen, and safety Jason Buck. Hall was a consensus All-American in 1993, and he finished the season with 113 tackles and 10 sacks. Christensen was also named to the All-WAC team in 1993, and he finished the season with 70 tackles and 11 sacks. Buck was the team's leading tackler in 1993 with 120 tackles, and he also had seven interceptions.
