Marshall Thundering Herd Offense (2000) - Ed Zaunbrecher
Ed Zaunbrecher was the offensive coordinator of the 2000 Marshall Thundering Herd football team. It was his first season as offensive coordinator at Marshall, and he helped lead the team to a 13-1 record and a Division I-A national championship game appearance.
Zaunbrecher was a disciple of the West Coast offense, which is a pro-style offense that emphasizes short passes, timing, and execution. The offense is designed to move the ball down the field methodically and to avoid turnovers.
Zaunbrecher installed the West Coast offense at Marshall, and he had immediate success. The Thundering Herd's offense ranked first in the nation in passing yards and second in the nation in total yards. The offense was led by quarterback Chad Pennington, who threw for 5,111 yards and 47 touchdowns in 2000. Running back Doug Chapman rushed for 1,634 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2000. Wide receiver Troy Brown caught 114 passes for 1,620 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2000.
