Michigan State Spartans Offense (1999)
The 1999 Michigan State Spartans football team finished the regular season with a record of 9-2, including a 6-2 mark in the Big Ten Conference. The Spartans were ranked 7th in the final AP poll, and they earned a berth in the 2000 Florida Citrus Bowl, where they defeated the Florida Gators 37-34.
The offensive coordinator of the 1999 Michigan State Spartans was Morris Watts. Watts was in his third stint as offensive coordinator at Michigan State, having previously served in that capacity for former head coach George Perles for eight seasons, from 1986-90 and 1992-94. He was hired by head coach Nick Saban to replace Gary Tranquill, who had left to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Virginia.
The Spartans' offense ranked 13th in the Big Ten in scoring offense in 1999, averaging 20.4 points per game. The offense was led by quarterback Jeff Smoker, who threw for 2,314 yards and 12 touchdowns. Running back T.J. Duckett rushed for 757 yards and 10 touchdowns. Wide receiver Plaxico Burress caught 47 passes for 694 yards and 4 touchdowns.
The offense used by the 1999 Michigan State Spartans football team was a pro-style offense that was designed to balance the run and pass. The offense was led by quarterback Jeff Smoker, who was a solid but unspectacular passer. Smoker was able to manage the game effectively and avoid turnovers.
