Brian Billick was the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings from 1994 to 1998. He was known for his innovative offensive schemes and his ability to develop young players. Under Billick's guidance, the Vikings' offense became one of the most explosive in the NFL.
In 1998, the Vikings set an NFL record for most points scored in a season with 556 points. They also set a team record with 41 touchdown passes. The Vikings' offense was led by quarterback Randall Cunningham, who threw for 4,434 yards and 31 touchdowns. The Vikings also had a number of talented receivers, including Cris Carter, Randy Moss, and Jake Reed. Carter caught 122 passes for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns, Moss caught 69 passes for 1,313 yards and 17 touchdowns, and Reed caught 69 passes for 1,011 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Vikings' offense was also able to run the ball effectively. Running back Robert Smith rushed for 1,521 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Vikings' offensive line was one of the best in the league, and they were able to create running lanes for Smith to exploit.
Billick's offensive scheme was based on the West Coast offense, which emphasizes short passes and quick releases. Billick also used a lot of play-action passes to keep defenses off balance. Billick was also known for his ability to develop young players. Moss was a rookie in 1998, and he quickly became one of the best receivers in the NFL under Billick's tutelage.
