Craig Bohl was the defensive coordinator of the 2002 Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. It was his third season in that role, and the Huskers' defense was ranked eighth in the nation in total defense in 2001. However, the defense regressed in 2002, ranking 56th in total defense.
The 2002 Nebraska Cornhuskers football team was a college football team that represented the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the 2002 NCAA Division I-A football season. The team was coached by Frank Solich and played their home games in Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers finished the season with a 7-7 record (62nd of 117) (Schedule & Results), which was their first losing season since 1978. With their loss to Ole Miss in the Independence Bowl, the Huskers streak of 40 straight winning seasons came to an end.
The Cornhuskers' offense was led by quarterback Eric Crouch, who threw for 1,975 yards and 14 touchdowns. Crouch was also a versatile runner, rushing for 865 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Cornhuskers' leading rusher was David Horne, who rushed for 1,034 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Cornhuskers' leading receiver was Nate Swift, who caught 40 passes for 610 yards and five touchdowns.
The Cornhuskers' defense was led by linebacker Barrett Ruud, who recorded 132 tackles. The Cornhuskers also had a number of other talented players on defense, including defensive tackle LeRoy Reynolds and cornerback Josh Brown.
The Cornhuskers had a few highlights in 2002, but they were unable to overcome their inconsistencies. They defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 37-31 in overtime, and they also defeated the Colorado Buffaloes 31-28. However, the Cornhuskers also lost to teams like Iowa State and Kansas State.
