The 2005 Oklahoma State Cowboys football team, representing Oklahoma State University during the 2005 NCAA Division I-A football season, made strides under the guidance of first-year head coach Mike Gundy. Gundy assumed the coaching reins after Les Miles departed for LSU, inheriting a team that had struggled with a 4-8 record in the previous year.
Elevating the offensive strategy, Gundy collaborated with offensive coordinator Larry Fedora, formerly the head coach at Austin Peay State University to install and run a version of the air raid offense. The tandem's synergy translated into tangible improvements for the Cowboys in the 2005 season. Notably, the team's average points per game surged from 27.0 in 2004 to an impressive 39.8 in 2005. The rushing attack also saw a substantial uptick, with an average of 201.7 yards per game compared to 161.2 yards per game the previous season.
Quarterback Bobby Reid emerged as a key player for the Cowboys' offense in 2005, amassing 2,336 passing yards and contributing 13 touchdowns. Reid's versatility was evident in his rushing performance, accumulating 484 yards and scoring four touchdowns. Running backs Vernand Morency and Dantrell Savage complemented the offensive effort, collectively surpassing 1,000 rushing yards and securing 10 touchdowns. Rashaun Woods led the receiving corps with 62 catches, 773 yards, and five touchdowns.
Despite marked improvements, the Cowboys concluded the 2005 season with a 4-7 record, including a 1-7 standing in Big 12 play. Victories over Montana State, Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State, and Colorado highlighted their season, while facing setbacks against Missouri, Texas A&M, Iowa State, Texas, Baylor, and Oklahoma.
