The 1986 Ole Miss Rebels football team concluded the season with an impressive 8-3-1 record, securing a commendable second-place finish in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference (SEC). Head coach Billy Brewer, in his fourth season at Ole Miss, played a crucial role in guiding the team's success.

Defensive Coordinator Carl Torbush, also in his fourth season at Ole Miss, orchestrated one of the nation's standout defenses. Torbush's defensive strategy focused on a "bend but don't break" approach, featuring a zone defense that relied on secondary coverage to thwart big plays. While the defense faced challenges in stopping the run and preventing large passing gains, it emerged as one of the best in the country.

In 1986, the Rebels allowed only 180.3 points throughout the season, ranking seventh-fewest nationally. Defensive tackle Mike Fitzsimmons led the charge with an impressive 125 tackles and eight sacks, earning him a well-deserved first-team All-SEC selection. Other standout players included linebacker Howard Moss and safety Brian Jordan.
