In a perfect world, Air Force wants to run their trap play against an odd front with their DE in a 5 technique, which is exactly the scenario shown above.

This versatile formation that Air Force is lined up in is how they run their trap, but it shows the defense the exact formation that they use to run a lot of their triple options.

What this does is allows Air Force to get set and see how the defense lines up. If they like what they see, they can stick with trap. If they don’t, they can easily audible into triple option and execute their reads.

With the DE being wide in a 5 tech, it gives the Tackle free access to the second level LB which is a huge advantage for the offense when running this play.

At the snap, the LG is going to down block the 0 tech with the help of the center. This will begin to form the alley for the FB to run through.

The RG comes around and is the trap player, kicking out the 5 tech and creates the other side of the alley.

The FB is coached to stay tight to the down block and run the line drawn above.

In addition to running basic trap from their triple option formation, Air Force also adds another element into the mix.

They show a variation of triple into the boundary after the ball has been given with the QB and slot back which keeps the backers wide and outside of the box where all of the action is taking place.

At its core this play is quite simple, but Air Force’s ability to disguise it and dress it up like another core run scheme of theirs is what allows it to be so complimentary and successful for this offense!
