Elite game planning and preparation makes a massive difference on game day…
That’s why today we’re going to talk about a simple rule of thumb that has allowed Onalaska High School to massively elevate their execution on plays that they install each week!
Coach Yashinsky covers more of his game planning process that has contributed to 5 conference championships in 7 seasons in our latest release: Building a Multiple Power Spread Offense – The Complete Series
How to Structure a Practice Script
Above is how Onalaska’s practice scripts look for a given day during their weekly prep.
Coach Yashinsky, the Head Coach at Onalaska likes to highlight plays on his call sheet that he wants to go through during pre-practice.
He strongly believes that plays need to be repped at least 8 times in order to be successful in games…
Here’s how he makes sure that they get there:
- All install plays get run everyday – Monday walk though them 2-3x each
- Tuesday/Wednesday pre-practice: walk through 2x each
- Tuesday/Wednesday practice: Practice 1x each
- Thursday practice: 1-2x each
**Make sure to practice situations! Short yardage and 2 point plays are practiced on Thursday at Onalaska.
Another important tip that Coach Yashinsky has for coaches is to script your practices for efficiency NOT to call it like a game! There is a time for both, but you want to make sure you’re getting an appropriate amount of reps at practice.
After all of the practice listed above, it should add up to at least 8 reps per install play, and can be relied upon in a game!
This is just one of Onalaska’s game planning tips that Coach Yashinsky covers in much more detail in our newest release Building a Multiple Power Spread Offense – The Complete Series
