Call Multiple Formations WITHOUT A Lot of Words

A lot of coaches want to go fast on offense, but how do you do it without getting too bland and repetitive?

Jeff Mullen, creator of the Big O System, has developed a simple collection of tags and play calling verbiage that has allowed his tempo offenses to get lined up at incredibly fast rates!

Today we’re going to take a look at four of Coach Mullen’s tags that help quickly inform his skill players where they are lining up in the formation.

“Big O” Bunch and Stack Tags

Coach Mullen’s primary goal in the tempo offense is to get all 11 men to the line really really fast.

While he wants to get the players lined up quickly, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they have to snap the ball fast. This gives the offense more time to assess the situation at the line and make the proper read for the coming play.

Stack Tags

All stack tags occur when the offense has a two-man surface. This call will bring the X in close to the other skill player inside of him.

Black – The X will come in close to the H who is tight to the offensive line.

Blue – The X and the H stack in a split position with more room between the stack and the offensive line.

Bunch Tags

A bunch tag occurs when the offense has a three-man surface. This call will bring the X and the S in close to the H or other skill players in the formation.

Brown – The S and the X bunch with the H tight to the offensive line. The H will always be on the inside unless more verbiage is added to change that.

Green – The S and the X bunch with the H on the inside in a split position.

An additional call that Coach Mullen utilizes is “swap”. This flips the order of the players in the stack/bunch formation which allows the offense to manipulate leverage and matchups. This will also change who is on and off of the ball.

These simple tags only add small amounts of verbiage to the play call which means it doesn’t slow down the players from getting on the ball and in their proper alignment at a rapid pace!
