Switching to the No Huddle can cause a big problem for your offensive line-
How do you snap the ball as fast as possible while still giving the O-Line enough time to ID the front?
One of the biggest skills that has allowed Coach Mullen to be so successful with this offense has been his ability to quickly ID defenses based on 2 key indicators that make all of the difference for the offense.
That’s why today we’re going to talk about how Coach Mullen IDs defenses using the Big O System and how this translates into rapid play calling that allows the offense to get ready fast!

The Simple Way to ID the Front
Reading defenses can be very complicated if you’re looking at all 11 players and each one of their movements, alignments, and adjustments.
In nearly every game, 75% of the defensive play calls will be a base defense whether the DC is calling an even or an odd front.
That’s why Coach Mullen likes to say that “less is more” and is why he strongly believes in sticking to two simple indicators to inform his play calling: numbers and angles.
The first thing that is naturally discussed in Coach Mullen’s defensive ID is angles because it can be addressed using the front that the defense shows.
When facing an even front, there are two potential options that the offense will face (see below).
Eagle: When the T is in a 3-technique.
Okie: When the NT is in any kind of A-gap shade.
The second thing that Coach Mullen looks for is the alignment of the Nickel/Spur player. The personnel type (LB or DB) that the defense puts on the field does not matter for the purpose of identification.
For example, if the Nickel/Spur is aligned strong with the T in a 3 tech, the play call would be entered into their film database as “Eagle Strong”.
As the OC, if the 3 tech is aligned to the field, Coach Mullen would call his gap scheme runs to the field and his zone run schemes to the boundary.
This means the defense would have an extra hat to the field which tells you that you would want to run to the ball weak.
From here, Coach Mullen would have all of the information that he needs to make a play call with good angles that are also away from the strength of the defense.
