How QBs in the Veer-And-Shoot read the defense

One of the biggest hallmarks of the Briles “Veer-And-Shoot” offense is the ability to create 1-on-1 matchups using a concept called the Deep Choice series.

Today we’re going to talk about how the Veer and Shoot offense uses simple rules for identifying spatial leverage, and how it uses these rules to generate explosive plays in the pass game.

Creating Big Plays with Simple Rules

Creating explosive plays can be very complicated if you’re trying to scheme up complex route combinations and multiple reads for your quarterback, and defensive coordinators have an endless amount of complex coverages to throw at you.

That’s why the Veer and Shoot likes to say that “less is more” and relies on two simple indicators to inform route adjustments: leverages and lanes.

The first thing that is naturally discussed in the Deep Choice series is leverages because it can be identified using the defender’s pre-snap alignment.

When facing any coverage, there are three potential options that the receiver will face:

  1. Inside: defender shaded toward the ball
  2. Outside: defender shaded away from the ball
  3. Over: defender aligned above the hard deck

The second thing that receivers look for is which lane the defender is occupying. The field is divided into five different lanes – and understanding which lane defenders are in allows receivers to find open space.

For example, if a safety is sitting inside on the hash, the slot receiver knows to attack vertically down the seam. If that safety crosses into Lane 2, the receiver can break to the post.

As the OC, if you see the defense playing with inside leverage and deep safeties, you know your receivers can win on choice routes by threatening vertical and breaking off routes based on defender reactions.

This means your offense can create explosive plays without complex schemes – just by teaching your receivers to read leverage and find open grass.

From here, your quarterback has clear indicators for where to go with the ball based on how defenders play the choice routes.
