How to Install the “Freeze” Play

Having different cadences in your arsenal is a great way to keep the defense honest, and generate free yardage when you catch them being undisciplined!

That’s why today we’re going to talk about how you can use the freeze cadence to create opportunities for your offense!

Master the use of different cadences while play calling for a No Huddle Offense in our latest release: The Complete No Huddle Playbook

The Freeze Cadence

Our No Huddle Offense’s normal cadence is signaled by the QB when he calls “DOWN”, and this tells the offense that he’s ready to start the play.

The play begins when the QB calls “GO” which is how all of our normal cadences are started.

The “freeze” signal is called by showing an image of Sonic (his friend “Tails”) on our boards which were discussed yesterday, and in much greater detail in the book.

Learn how to install the "Freeze" play in your no huddle offense. Discover how different cadences can keep defenses off balance and create free yardage. Master these techniques with The Complete No Huddle Playbook.

On the board above Tails is shown in the upper right corner which indicates to the offense that the play will be on a freeze cadence.

For example. if the call on the field is “Hurry”, the QB should echo this to everyone around him. The automatic call for Freeze is “Ace Right Freeze”.

In this situation, the offense should attempt to line up as quickly as possible and get the dummy cadence off. If the defense jumps, it’s a free play and everyone should go deep to take advantage of the “free play.

If they don’t jump, the QB and skill players should look to the sideline for the call which will come via hand signals.

While this is happening, the O-Line stays in their stance, and the QB walks behind them repeating the call to make sure everyone knows their assignment.

If the play called is a run, the offense will be given the run call. If it is a pass, the offense will be given a Ram/Lion or Rip/Liz call or other pass protection information.

As noted above for our offense’s standard cadence, the QB will signal to the offense that he is ready to start the play with a “DOWN” call.

In The Complete No Huddle Playbook we go into more detail discussing how we use different paces and cadences to maximize our ability to stress defenses!
