Teaching zone pressure coverages can feel overwhelming if you’re trying to account for every player, technique, and adjustment on the field.
In nearly every game, a strong defense relies on a mix of base coverages and well-timed pressures to disrupt the offense. Coach Miller simplifies this with his Fire Zone (3 deep, 3 under) and Hot Coverage (3 deep, 2 under) systems.
Here’s how Coach Miller breaks it down:
- Fire Zone Coverage: A 5-man pressure that leaves 6 in coverage—3 deep (field corner and two safeties) and 3 underneath (two “orc” droppers outside #2 and a middle dropper inside #3). It’s simple, adaptable, and keeps your players in position to make plays.
- Hot Coverage: A 6-man blitz with 5 in coverage—3 deep (corners on the outside thirds, safety in the middle third) and 2 underneath (“ink” droppers inside #2). It closes the middle of the field and forces quarterbacks into tough decisions.

For example, in Fire Zone, if the boundary corner blitzes, the linebacker replaces him as an “orc” dropper outside #2, while the rover drops over the ball as the middle third. Coach Miller’s techniques—like the “shuffle shuffle bail”—ensure your DBs stay disciplined and ready to break on the ball.
